In front of the coast of Actio Octavian - the later emperor Augustus - fought against his antagonists Antonius and Cleopatra. When Cleopatra abandoned Antonius the battle was decided and the Roman Empire was united again.

For the memory of his victory Octavian let build the town of victory Nikopolis. Greeks all over Epirus had to settle at Nikopolis.

The city-wall, the theatre and the stadium have been preserved until today.
